I made the mistake of going to this movie with my wife for Valentines's Day. He is a needy, amiable, slightly hysterical doofus. Cheating on your spouse IS wrong! The film was directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. It's clear Pete is feeling the shrinking pleasures of marriage, fatherhood and middle age, and craving youthful adventure. When Zach and Rosie turn up and start sharing their bliss, the get-together is soured by Billie's account of the avalanche experience and Pete's defensive self-justification. What an awful movie! If you're looking for something a little more than a pretty good comedy/drama, you might come away slightly disappointed. Was this review helpful? No thanks! The Swedish actors are far more subdued, understated, and dry, dissolving into playing mundane, regular folk. The film isn’t sure whether to take Pete’s side or Billie’s, or if it should really take a side at all, and so it hovers like an insincere friend, nodding and chuckling and refusing to judge. The result is a small disaster. Force Majeure is critically acclaimed for its blend of comedy and drama, but that is the exact area in which Downhill fails. The triumphant recapturing of masculinity builds to its own satirical breaking point, ready to laugh at Tomas feeling like a ridiculous John Wane-style cowboy. All rights reserved.

No more recycling! Fox Searchlight Pictures

Would have walked out but my wife liked the Austrian mountain ski scenes. It's a hilarious moment and borne from the organic developments tied to character relationships. And not all women are right just because they're women! Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus star in this timid remake of a dark Swedish vacation comedy. When you purchase a ticket for an independently reviewed film through our site, we earn an affiliate commission.“Downhill” is a vacation-gone-wrong comedy that lives up to its ill-advised title. Saw this opening night and was expecting a great new comedy..... big mistake. I've been meaning to watch 2014's Force Majeure for some time but it was one of those movies that just fell behind and got trapped by the ever-increasing backlog of "to see" films. A middle-class couple, Billie and Pete Stanton (Louis-Dreyfus, Ferrell), whose marriage is showing mild signs of friction, are forced to re-evaluate themselves and each other through a less-forgiving lens when their vacation is marred by what feels like a near-disaster. That's just ridiculous. It places people in a somewhat unexpected, yet perfectly realistic, situation and shows how their lives gradually implode in the aftermath. You'd be better off seeking out the more effective original than settling for a pale facsimile. So, why did it whiff so miserably? Boy did it go wrong.

), humor, and a romantic moments. No person, woman or not should be justified in screaming at their spouse and acting like a lunatic. Cinemark 82 out of 91 found this helpful.

Downhill: B- It's like watching a home movie with two people who don't really love, or like, each other very much. The endings are different and come across a similar questioning message over never knowing how a person may respond in the middle of danger. I'm a huge movie buff. Was this review helpful?

With Force Majeure, the children are kept on the sidelines and they're more worried that mom and dad may be doomed to a divorce rather than being upset or disappointed with their father. Tomas lays on the floor wailing like a child, which then triggers his children to come out and lay upon their weeping father and then admonish their mother to follow their supportive lead.
