Good climb and the view at the top of Mt Shaw was beautiful.
Trail was icy midway but turned to snow. Mount Shaw via Gorilla Trail [CLOSED] is a 6.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Tuftonboro, New Hampshire that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and snowshoeing and is best used from April until October. This note will not be visible to the public when your geocache is published. Turn right and follow the path for 0.3 miles as it runs nearly level across the hillside, then descends slightly to reach a junction with Black Snout Trail.
If you climb the Black Snout trail there is a look out spot you can walk to right before you hit big ball peak which is in my opinion better that the summits view.
UGANDA OFFICE ADDRESS P.O. The trail isn't blazed very well up until the incline, but does get easier to follow towards the top. (You can go either way since this is a loop hike, but the rest of these directions will go right, counter-clock-wise). Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. Shaw can also be reached in the winter via snowmobile. Reached Black Snout easily and enjoyed some beautiful views before heading over to Mt. At 2990 Ft, Mt. Go right at the fork onto the Italian Trail. Headed out at 6:30am. 11/10/2002
The view from the top was amazing. Little buggy and very muddy. If it wasn't for this I would have given it 5 stars.
Turn left and soon come out into an open area on the grassy road.
The overall descent was steeper than expected, and the loop measured out at 10.5 miles on MapMyHike, which tends to read somewhat high. As the water was high, we bushwhacked around the major stream crossings via an old logging road, which required some skillful route finding to get back to the trail.
I don’t like tree branches over my face and legs. Arrived early to avoid people. Had to break Trail & it got miserable going up Shaw mountain trail. Shaw, many others connect to them, including the Mt. Parking area for the this trail is closed (camp is closed, sign says “no hikers”) so we parked at the Mount Shaw trailhead off 171 and still logged an 8ish mile hike with a beautiful view at the topmore snow than we anticipated and reviews were correct - very hard to find the blazes in some parts. All site matter is subjective.
Once you get onto conservation land, the trails are pretty well marked although many were faded.
Trail markers could be better in a few spots. There are some spots in the trail where it gets narrow and branches overhanging into the trail. This may explain why there are NO signs. Turn right and follow Black Snout Trail for 0.2 mile until reaching a spur trail.
