I’m partial to red, orange, and yellow; bluefish seem to be as well. I have been surf fishing for 30 years and thought I had the best rigs to use. I’ve actually caught them on bottom while fishing for golden tiles in 800 feet of water. You can use a fireball rig or a fish finder rig.

The bluefish has extremely sharp teeth, so regardless of which rig you choose, a wire leader is advisable. And unlike the bluefish, black drum are picky eaters. Thaw and use a whole squid on the hook. For stripers, I like baitholder or octopus-style hooks with the clams and worms.

The wire leader length should be around 18 inches between hook and swivel. The longer leader will also allow the clam and its trailing pieces to be washed around with the swell, which is a more natural look for the bait.With bunker, depending on the location, a little extra distance usually helps, so I pin the weight right on top of the bait.
