The original Hatteras Bluefish rig is made on 60 lb black nylon coated wire. However, it is advised to stay away from casting bucktails, because those razor-sharp teeth cut the hair off in short order leaving you with what only can be described as a very ugly lure. They like menhaden, shrimp, squid and other bait fish similar to sardines. Spring is a good time to aim for big bluefish, so follow these tips the next time the season comes. I’m partial to red, orange, and yellow; bluefish seem to be as well. I have been surf fishing for 30 years and thought I had the best rigs to use. I’ve actually caught them on bottom while fishing for golden tiles in 800 feet of water. You can use a fireball rig or a fish finder rig.
The bluefish has extremely sharp teeth, so regardless of which rig you choose, a wire leader is advisable. And unlike the bluefish, black drum are picky eaters. Thaw and use a whole squid on the hook. For stripers, I like baitholder or octopus-style hooks with the clams and worms.
The wire leader length should be around 18 inches between hook and swivel. The longer leader will also allow the clam and its trailing pieces to be washed around with the swell, which is a more natural look for the bait.With bunker, depending on the location, a little extra distance usually helps, so I pin the weight right on top of the bait. This is because when I’m fishing clams, I never want my bait too far beyond the breakers, because this zone is where the wave activity will naturally break up the shellfish, and bass prowling through this area are often looking for an easy meal of crushed clams. They are hungry, roam just about everywhere there is saltwater, and can be found from the surf out to the deep. High tide, low tide, rain, sun, warm, cold, wind, or beautiful calm spring day can all be productive – and you just never know when a school of blues will blitz the beach. Spoons work well. 3oz. but bunker, mackeral and clams work best. They are hungry, roam just about everywhere there is saltwater, and can be found from the surf out to the deep. Unlike the fish-finder rig, where the weight is above the hook, in a high/low rig the hooks are spaced out above the weight.
