They play around the various cellars in summer and are obviously there to get paid in tips but if you don't want them near you then you can just gesture them away. As for the food in the restaurants, well again, some are better than others but having eaten in several of them and also in numerous restaurants in Eger itself there's not a great deal of difference...they are all there to serve tourists. The wine is made from many different varieties of grape which are grown on the Sike's 24 hectares of land dotted around the Eger wine-growing region. Simply having a nice meal somewhere like the Szenator on Dobo Ter (the main square) will expose you to far better food and wine. And rightfully so as the wine is so revered that it is mentioned in Hungary’s national anthem – “sweet nectar of Tokaj.” 1. Don`t leave Eger before tasting these: Egri Bikavér (Bull`s Blood) "It is quite snobbish to think that the better the quality, the nicer the wine.
I would like to disagree with a couple of the above posts as far as Szépasszony-völgy is concerned. As we will be arriving in the late morning from Budapest, we only have few hours to see most of the main sights in the center.We would also like to tour some of the wine cellars outside of town, and I have read that some are open late. If you want to taste the wines of Eger first you should visit the well-known and loved wine valley: Szépasszony-valley (The Valley of the Beautiful Woman).
