Congratulations to the Friends of the Woods & Wetlands group who tied for the Volunteer of the Year Award.“An 80 degree day in February stands in sharp contrast to the biting winds that we can reasonably expect in March. There are more than a dozen working groups within Friends of the Woods and Wetlands, all dedicated to a particular area of interest.Residents initiated a guided Flower Tour walk through our wetlands to see the variety of wildflowers there were blooming. ne of the sub groups of the resident led Friends of the Woods & Wetlands focuses on Bird Identification on campus. The Friends of the Woods & Wetlands has several working groups:This recent article by Larry Guengerich, published on the American Institute of Architects Website highlights Landis Homes commitment to caring for the natural environment and how we see this focus as an important part of how we live into our guiding value of stewardship. Fish and game would have been gathered from the park and the remains of the medieval fishponds still remain in Morgaston Woods. But this comment cannot be literally true for very many woods. This community, which relates to a number of Mennonite groups, believes that its environmentally sensitive areas and rural, character-defining features must be conserved in order for its facilities and the broader community to flourish in the future.Many residents at Landis Homes not only support these efforts, they bring it upon themselves to participate.
The wetlands were formed in early 21st century from the remains of a water meadow. Snowdrops in Leaman woods are in full bloom, an exception.

The Nature Parks is a not-for-profit body created . The group dedicated, blessed, and opened a new paved pathway to make the area more accessible to all, along with a gazebo for use by residents and their families and guests. Healthy woodlands and wetlands are teeming with life.
That’s changing, as retirement communities, to use the popular term, “go green.” Brothers Warren and Norman Shenk joined forces to install bluebird boxes around the Landis Homes campus over the past year.

Don't forget to take time to explore our woodland and wetlands when you visit us. While dormancy still holds a firm grip on much of the biota around us, there is evidence of an awakening. Wetlands have unique characteristics: they are generally distinguished from other water bodies or landforms based on their water level and on the types of plants that live within them.
This particular variety of plants, distributed with directions for planting, are good for butterflies to feed and lay eggs on.
