Dey was born in a Bengali family to Mahamaya and Purna Chandra Dey on 1 May 1919 in Calcutta (Now Dey began taking music lessons from Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan.

After securing a bachelor’s degree in Hindi and a master’s degree in English literature from the Lahore university, he was to join his family’s business in Rawalpindi. In the fifties, when classical music ruled Hindi cinema, Manna Dey’s training in classical music got utilized to the hilt. He received his initial training under his legendary uncle Krishna Dey.
