If you are looking for an exciting adventure, read this book!

The Fastnet Disaster has been a part of Ward's life ever since – not only as a terrible memory but as the source of an ongoing controversy. A worse-than-expected storm on the third day of the race wreaked havoc on over 303 yachts that started the biennial race, resulting in 19 fatalities. Having been caught in a small storm myself for four hours - I cannot imagine what this author endured. Anyone starting this book should make no other plans, as every interruption I experienced was deeply resented.

This was an easy and enjoyable read. I knew this book would be a great read as I've seen the documentary about the 79 fastnet and its back story but i wasnt expecting to feel so emotional while reading it .

I coped with the scene setting of the early chapters; in fact they surprised me by being very readable indeed. Nick Ward and Gerry Winks were, he said, motionless in the cockpit, apparently dead. If you are lucky enough to be chosen to crew on a boat in the race forevermore your reputation as a sailor is sealed.

When Nick was finally rescued, I was a little startled to find myself in Atlanta in 2013, warm and dry and not somewhere on the English coast. I have an interest in sailing and mountaineering biographies and a personal connection to this book. They bear away downwind unless trysail can keep her into the wind or a sea anchor from my experience. In my opinion this is a very interesting book.

Nick Ward's account of being in the Fastnet Race of 1979 and left for dead on the Atlantic Ocean when he was twenty four years old is riveting. Neil Tweedie joins him as he returns for the first time to the scene of his nightmare.

For those who may be put off by their lack of interest or knowledge in sailing, don't be... OK, there is a certain amount of technical terminology but if I coped, anyone can, and there is a reference diagram in case the reader wishes to learn a little more. "It seemed a way of providing some form of closure for Nick," she says.
I still remember the news reports at the time so hoped to learn more from the book and I certainly did!A true story of adventure, tragedy and emotion, which nearly didn't get toldReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2007 Grimalkin was capsized again and again, the skipper was lost overboard and after hours of struggle, three of the crew decided to abandon the boat for the liferaft.
