I dont think you can even have a bigger than posted motor on the boat in the lake. That's part of the lakes charm.
However I will say with some certanty that you will not want or be able to physically portage the boat to Newton.
I run a 90 tiller 1875 pro guide. If you have an account,
Saganaga is one of my favorite bwca lakes..its huge so you almost need a guide your first time..we travel up there from duluth once a year,Generally in lake may…we usually have our limit in lakers within the first two days, then we switch to walleyes…pulled …
There IS an exception to the pontoon rule, and that is for Veterans on the Lake, and them only. Just finished up baseball season and got back to the lake.
This site has grown since 2002 from a few visitors a day to up to 10,000 Had great news yesterday, my Leukemia went into complete remission, so I'll again be on Ottertail before the end of August chasing walleye and sunnies. You want to be VERY cautious in your navigation, since there are plenty of ways to get into mischief.
Entry point 55 allows access to Saganaga and from there you can enter Quetico Provincial Park, start a trip down the border waters into Ottertrack Lake, or make a quick loop down through Red Rock Lake and back out on Seagull Lake. Stop in at Redding’s and ask if they can help. Walleye fishing does change to deeper water, later change of light into night.
Wilderness will still remain ooen to motor- boats after the 1984 motor route phase-outs, including most of Basswood Lake. I do remember something about American Point and no motors were allowed.I dont think thats legal. On these lakes, the possession of one additional motor no greater than 6 horsepower is permitted, as long as motors in use do not exceed 10 horsepower. No restrictions on motors.
You can post now and register later. heading up tonight to give it a run. Another little gem is that you cannot have a pontoon boat over the imaginary line. Or maybe even Emily Meats. Within 5 years, water clarity on Sand went to 14' and weed lines extended to 11'. visitors a day during peak season.
Basswood Lake, Trout Lake and Saganaga are the three big lake options and any would be a good choice.
Had to check 4 reef before finding active fish. This special rule regarding boats with larger motors is to accommodate those folks heading to Canada.
