McCaffrey, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver, won three Super Bowls over the course of a 13-year NFL career. In the late 1950s the greatest all-round athlete on the planet was a college kid called Dave Sime, from Fair Lawn, New Jersey.

"With the cancer now, I don't like to fly so much," he explains. The two men became friends.
